The Swiss Stock Exchange is actively considering the creation of a dedicated venue for cryptocurrency trading in Europe, positioning itself to compete with established digital asset firms such as Binance, OKX, and Coinbase.

This initiative comes as traditional investors increasingly seek opportunities in the cryptocurrency market, which has grown in recognition as a legitimate asset class. Bjørn Sibbern, the global head of exchanges at SIX Group, mentioned in an interview, "Crypto has become more and more a recognized asset class," indicating that the exchange is exploring a platform that could facilitate both spot crypto trading and derivatives.

Despite the interest, many traditional finance firms have remained hesitant to venture into crypto trading due to the absence of clear regulations and concerns about potential reputational risks. Notably, firms like Deutsche Boerse, Nomura, and Standard Chartered have set up separate crypto exchanges, while others like Cboe Global Markets have shut down their venues due to regulatory ambiguities.

Sibbern pointed out that recent developments, such as the approval of spot bitcoin and ethereum exchange-traded funds by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, have spurred significant investment interest from both retail and institutional players.

Although the price of bitcoin has experienced fluctuations, dropping from a peak of approximately $72,000 to around $60,000, it still boasts a 40% increase for the year. Switzerland has emerged as a leader in crypto-friendly regulations, making it an attractive location for such trading ventures.

Sibbern noted, "We see the trend that more and more global banks and institutions are looking at crypto," suggesting a broader shift in the finance industry's perspective on digital assets. The proposed venue would be targeted exclusively at institutional investors, including asset managers, as SIX aims to build on its existing crypto derivatives operations, exemplified by its joint venture, AsiaNext, in Singapore.
