SoftBank and OpenAI Join Forces to Launch Advanced AI for Enterprise Transformation
SoftBank Group has teamed up with OpenAI to roll out a new AI solution, Cristal intelligence, aimed at reshaping how businesses operate. With a hefty investment of $3 billion annually, SoftBank is set to integrate AI-powered tools across its portfolio, including its subsidiaries Arm and SoftBank Corp., aiming to automate and optimize a wide range of business processes.
Cristal intelligence is a highly customized AI system designed to seamlessly incorporate a company’s data and infrastructure, delivering AI solutions tailored to each business. This collaboration will also introduce ChatGPT Enterprise tools across SoftBank’s operations, positioning it as a leader in large-scale AI adoption. The partnership isn’t just focused on internal operations—SoftBank and OpenAI are working together to launch a joint venture, SB OpenAI Japan, which will focus on deploying Cristal intelligence to major enterprises in Japan. This venture will serve as a key initiative for driving AI-driven transformations in one of the world’s most advanced markets.
The AI models behind Cristal intelligence, based on OpenAI’s O1-series, are expected to evolve into autonomous agents by 2025. These AI agents will be capable of performing complex tasks on behalf of knowledge workers, automating routine activities such as report generation, customer service management, and content creation. The goal is to free up employees to focus on strategic thinking and creative problem-solving, while AI takes care of the repetitive work.
For SoftBank’s subsidiaries, the implementation of Cristal intelligence will mean a more efficient and streamlined approach to operations. Arm, for instance, plans to use the technology to enhance productivity and foster further innovation in AI. SoftBank Corp. aims to automate millions of workflows across its various business segments, using the AI to improve processes and unlock new opportunities. This level of automation is set to bring about a significant transformation in the company’s internal operations and in the services it offers to its clients.
SB OpenAI Japan, a 50:50 partnership between SoftBank and OpenAI, will be at the heart of this AI rollout in Japan. By providing companies with the ability to securely train and fine-tune AI agents using their own data, the joint venture is aiming to bring AI solutions to a broader range of businesses. These AI agents will be integrated into existing systems, allowing companies to automate processes and optimize workflows while adapting to their specific needs.
As part of the collaboration, SoftBank Corp. will also contribute its extensive local market knowledge and business insights, helping to ensure that the technology is deployed effectively. Meanwhile, OpenAI will provide technical support and expertise in AI research and development. Arm will also play a role by providing the computational power necessary to support the growing demands of AI.
This partnership marks a significant step forward in the adoption of AI technologies across major enterprises. Through the launch of Cristal intelligence, SoftBank and OpenAI are aiming to create a scalable model for businesses worldwide to leverage AI, ultimately improving operational efficiency, enhancing decision-making, and opening up new business opportunities. The collaboration sets the stage for a future where AI is not just a tool but a core component of how enterprises function and innovate.
