South African Banking Giant Capitec Taps Andrew Baker as CTO

Capitec Bank, one of the largest retail banks in South Africa, has appointed a new chief technology officer (CTO), Andrew Baker.

Baker spent a decade with Barclays Africa Group as chief information officer (CIO) and CTO, and then nearly four years at the banking group's successor,, Absa Group, as CTO.

Following that, he had a brief five-month stint at AWS as director of engineering, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.

Capitec was founded in 2001, with HQ in Stellenbosch, Western Cape.

It has 14.7 million clients, a network of 850+ branches and over 14,000 employees.

Among its technology partners are payment software provider HPS, biometric ID solution provider Daon, treasury and capital markets software supplier ION Treasury, and banking and payment software vendor TCS Financial Solutions.
