Funding for Southeast Asia's (SEA) fintech sector experienced a significant drop in 2024, according to data from Traxcn. Total funding reached $1.6 billion, a 23% year-on-year (YoY) decrease and a 75% decline from the $6.3 billion secured in 2022. This marks a return to pre-pandemic funding levels, reflecting the impact of various economic and geopolitical factors.

Traxcn reported declines across all investment stages. Seed-stage funding fell 6.4% to $190 million, early-stage funding dropped 16% to $750 million, and late-stage investments saw the steepest decline, decreasing 31% to $694 million. Traxcn attributed this downturn to "challenges posed by macroeconomic conditions, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions."

Despite the decline, Traxcn emphasized that SEA's fintech sector remains a top performer within the region's tech startup landscape. Neha Singh, co-founder and CEO of Tracxn, commented that "Southeast Asia's FinTech ecosystem demonstrated remarkable resilience in 2024...Despite challenges such as rising interest rates, the sector's innovative spirit continued to shine, with segments like payments and cryptocurrencies achieving significant growth."

Ascend Money's $195 million Series D round was the largest deal of the year, followed by ANEXT Bank's $148 million Series D round and Bolttech's $100 million Series C round. Singapore led in funding activity with $955 million, followed by Jakarta ($242 million) and Bangkok ($198 million).
