This figure represents a 23% decline from 2023 and a drastic 75% fall from the heights of 2022. These numbers, reported in Tracxn's GEO Annual Report on Fintech - SEA 2024, reflect the broader global trend of cautious investing driven by macroeconomic challenges, including rising interest rates and geopolitical tensions.

Despite these headwinds, the region’s fintech sector remains resilient, holding up as one of the stronger performers within the wider Southeast Asian tech ecosystem. Much of this durability can be attributed to the lasting digital shift towards financial services, a trend significantly accelerated by the pandemic. As e-commerce and contactless payments have become increasingly essential, fintech has secured a vital role in the region’s economic landscape.

Investment patterns in 2024 show a marked decline across various stages. Seed-stage funding reached $190 million, a slight dip from $203 million in 2023, while early-stage funding also fell 16%, from $893 million to $750 million. The most dramatic decrease was seen in late-stage funding, which plummeted by 31%, bringing in just $694 million for the year. However, specific sectors within fintech, notably payments, cryptocurrency, and banking technology, have bucked this trend.

The payments space, for example, experienced a 53% rise in funding, reaching $366 million. Similarly, cryptocurrencies saw a 20% increase, drawing $325 million in investment, while banking technology surged by 63%, with $265 million raised. These sectors stand out as areas of enduring investor confidence, with their potential for innovation and security continuing to attract capital even in more uncertain times.

In terms of significant deals, Ascend Money’s $195 million Series D round was the largest investment of the year, closely followed by ANEXT Bank’s $148 million and Bolttech’s $100 million rounds. While the number of new unicorns in the region was limited, Polyhedra Network emerged as the sole newcomer, raising $20 million in Series B funding and reaching a $1 billion valuation.

Geographically, Singapore has solidified its position as the leader in fintech investment, drawing in $955 million in 2024. Jakarta and Bangkok followed with $242 million and $198 million, respectively. This concentration of funds in these cities highlights the crucial role played by strong regulatory frameworks and dynamic startup ecosystems, which continue to drive innovation.

Investor activity has remained robust despite the overall funding decline. Leading investors such as East Ventures, Y Combinator, and 500 Global have remained active in both early- and late-stage investments, while seed-stage funding has seen participation from Antler and Mirana. NewView Capital and The Rise Fund have played a significant role in supporting late-stage growth, underlining continued faith in the region’s fintech potential despite short-term setbacks.

Looking ahead, the region’s fintech sector is positioned for long-term growth. Southeast Asia’s young, tech-savvy population, coupled with an expanding digital economy and government support for financial inclusion, lays a strong foundation for recovery and growth. Although the market faces several challenges in the short term, the long-term outlook remains positive, driven by the growing demand for digital financial solutions and continued innovation in key niches.

Tracxn’s report highlights this optimism, noting that while funding may be more restrained in the immediate future, the fintech ecosystem’s underlying potential and the region's entrepreneurial spirit remain key drivers of progress. As Southeast Asia adapts to the evolving financial landscape, investors are expected to continue backing the innovations that will define the future of finance in this fast-developing market.
