Standard Chartered PLC revealed a 1.5 billion share buyback program on Friday, following an 186 billion for 2024, up from 5.1 billion the previous year, though slightly below analysts' expectations of 6.2 billion.

CEO Bill Winters highlighted the bank's strategic positioning in high-growth markets, stating, "Growth in our footprint markets across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East is set to outpace global growth... and we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of this." The bank's wealth business saw record growth, with 265,000 new wealthy clients bringing in $44 billion in new assets, a 61% increase from the previous year.

Despite a challenging global economic outlook, StanChart plans to invest $1.5 billion over five years in wealth and digital platforms, client centers, and marketing to drive income growth. Winters expressed confidence in the strategy, saying, "We are confident that our increased investment and greater concentration will help us outperform the market in terms of asset gathering and income growth over the medium term."

The bank's Hong Kong shares trimmed losses to 0.6% after the earnings announcement, outperforming the broader market, which was buoyed by strong sentiment in China's tech sector. StanChart also declared a final interim dividend of 28 cents per share.
