Stripe and Paradigm Launch Tempo Blockchain for Payments

A new blockchain project, Tempo, has been spun out of Stripe with backing from Paradigm, aiming to become a payments-focused layer-1 network designed for large-scale financial services. The project, now operating as an independent company, positions itself as an infrastructure layer for stablecoins and on-chain financial applications.

Stripe co-founder and CEO Patrick Collison shared the news on X, noting that the blockchain is intended to support a wide range of use cases, from global payouts and remittances to microtransactions and tokenized deposits. "We hope that Tempo makes it easier for things like payment acceptance, global payouts, remittances, microtransactions, tokenized deposits, agentic payments, and more, to move onchain," he wrote.

Tempo has already secured high-profile design partners across both fintech and traditional finance, including Deutsche Bank, Visa, Standard Chartered, Shopify, Nubank, Revolut, OpenAI, and DoorDash. This lineup reflects a deliberate strategy to involve players spanning technology, e-commerce, and banking.

The company will be led by Mall Huang, co-founder of Paradigm and a member of Stripe's board. Huang described the initiative as purpose-built for a world where stablecoins are gaining wider adoption. "As stablecoins go mainstream, there's a need for optimized infrastructure. Tempo is purpose-built for stablecoins and real-world payments, born from Stripe's experience in global payments and Paradigm's expertise in crypto," Huang said.

Tempo's roadmap highlights several core features: predictably low fees, optional privacy settings, a user experience focused on payments, and scalability to handle global flows such as payroll, remittances, and cross-border pay-ins and payouts.

By combining the technical expertise of Stripe with Paradigm's crypto specialization, Tempo enters a competitive field where blockchain-based payment solutions are increasingly being tested. Its positioning, however, is distinct in its focus on stablecoin-driven transactions and practical financial services, rather than speculative trading.
