The prospect of payments giant Stripe going public has been a topic of interest since early 2023, yet more than a year later, the company remains privately held. Steve Klebe, who served as Stripe's head of enterprise payments performance until 2022 and is now a consultant and investor, remarked, "This notion of [Stripe] going public has been germinating for years," reflecting the ongoing anticipation among investors and employees. Despite multiple inquiries into a potential initial public offering (IPO), Stripe executives have remained largely non-committal. President John Collison, when asked in a recent Bloomberg interview, said, "Presumably at some stage," suggesting a future IPO without offering specifics.

This follows earlier statements from the Collison brothers in January 2023, where they indicated a desire to take the company public within the year or allow employees to sell shares. As that timeline has passed without an announcement, Collison later told Fortune that they have "no news to share" about the IPO, adding, "When it's time to share, we'll share it."

Analysts believe that, despite the lack of formal confirmation, there are indications that Stripe is gearing up for an IPO. Klebe noted that the company has begun to operate in ways typical of public companies, including publishing financial performance letters that detail surpassing $1 trillion in payment volume for the first time in 2023—a 25% increase from the previous year.

While Stripe has not disclosed its net income, it mentioned being cash flow positive in 2023. Furthermore, venture capital firm Sequoia Capital recently valued Stripe at $70 billion, further heightening speculation about a future public offering. Stripe's recent moves, such as a planned $6.5 billion private funding round and an offer for $65 billion in liquidity for employees, suggest a strategy that could be aligned with preparing for an IPO. However, industry insiders like Glen Anderson, co-founder of Rainmaker Securities, caution that the company might be biding its time, particularly given the potential volatility of an election year.

"Stripe can IPO any time they want, but they don't need the cash, and they're in no rush," he explained.
