Swift Selected to Develop Confirmation of Payee Service for Enhanced Payment Security in Australia

In a bid to bolster payment security and mitigate the risks of fraud, Swift has been chosen to spearhead the development of a new service aimed at fortifying Australia's financial landscape. The announcement was made on March 19 by Swift, following its selection by Australian Payments Plus (AP+) to construct a Confirmation of Payee system, set to augment defenses against misdirected payments and fraudulent activities, thereby instilling greater confidence among Australians when transferring money.
The Confirmation of Payee service, a security measure facilitated by Swift, is designed to authenticate the identity of payees before transactions are executed. By cross-referencing the payee's name provided by the payer with the name linked to the payee's account, the system serves as a deterrent against potential scams and unauthorized transactions. The service will be seamlessly integrated into the New Payments Platform (NPP), leveraging standardized APIs and a centralized account matching service managed by AP+.
Swift's appointment to develop the Confirmation of Payee service for the NPP underscores its proficiency in artificial intelligence (AI) and data services, exemplified by its successful implementation of Payments Pre-validation for cross-border payments. This initiative has already streamlined international payments by verifying account details upfront, thus reducing friction in the payment process.
Suresh Rajalingam, Head of Oceania at Swift, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Making payments safe, instant, and frictionless is at the heart of everything we do at Swift. We are delighted to be working with AP+ and NPP participants to develop this important new service for Australian consumers."
Adrian Lovney, Chief Payment and Schemes Officer at AP+, emphasized the pivotal role of the Confirmation of Payee service in combating scams and safeguarding consumers and businesses alike. Lovney underscored AP+'s commitment to collaborating with industry stakeholders to enhance security measures and prevent fraudulent activities, citing Swift as the logical partner for the endeavor.
The rollout of the new service will unfold gradually throughout 2024, with features being developed and tested to ensure seamless integration into banking channels by 2025.
