Financial companies around the world are again cutting costs and closing operations this week as they battle the sluggish economy.

On Monday, Australian lender Westpac Banking Corp (Westpac) and SoftBank Group Corp (SoftBank), two of the global leading banks, announced their fresh round of layoffs. Westpac will cut around 300 jobs in its consumer and business banking segments, while SoftBank revealed that the layoffs would impact up to 30% of its staff at its Vision Fund investment arm.

HSBC said on Tuesday that it has decided to wind down its wealth and personal banking business in New Zealand within a few years as it exits from less profitable businesses globally to focus on expanding in certain Asian markets. This is another important move for the bank following the closure of its more than branches in the UK and layoff of more than 200 Senior Operations Managers.

Wall Street giant, Goldman Sachs Group, revealed that it is cutting more than 30 banking jobs in Asia, and the reduction in regional jobs had been started on Wednesday. China-focused bankers were hit hardest, with nine equities capital markets bankers who are based in Beijing and Hong Kong being laid off, including a managing director, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

In addition to banks, fintech and cryptocurrency companies have not escaped layoffs this week. UK payments unicorn GoCardless is to cut 17% of staff, or 135 positions, in a bid to shave 15% off its cost base. Additionally, its senior leadership team will be slimmed down by 25% and 59 new open roles waiting for fulfilment will be closed. And Binance, a crypto giant, also went through a layoff involving more than 50 people after it was cracked down by regulators.

The current employment environment is far from ideal. Given this, Fazzaco found that there are still many financial companies, especially brokers and fintechs, who are eager to hire new forces to strengthen their sales, marketing and business development teams.
