Stablecoin issuer Tether is preparing to launch a U.S.-focused institutional product amid growing regulatory clarity and increased competition.

Tether is preparing to debut a new U.S.-based stablecoin tailored for institutional use, CEO Paolo Ardoino said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. While the official launch date remains unannounced, Ardoino indicated the initiative is "well underway" and tied to the company's broader domestic strategy.

The announcement follows the recent passage of the GENIUS Act, new federal legislation outlining compliance standards for stablecoin issuers, including reserve backing and mandatory audits. Tether, which issues the $162 billion USDT token, has faced long-standing scrutiny regarding transparency and auditing.

Ardoino also addressed Tether's ambitions in a competitive environment where major U.S. banks are exploring their own stablecoin offerings. "They might be better than us in the short term... but we have better technology. We understand this market better than anyone," he said.

Tether continues to report strong financial reserves, with $98.5 billion held in Treasury bills and $5.6 billion in excess reserves as of March 2025. The company has also invested over $2 billion of surplus funds into areas including renewable energy and digital infrastructure, underscoring its long-term strategic diversification.

Despite speculation, Ardoino reaffirmed that Tether has no plans to go public, distinguishing it from rivals like Circle, which are pursuing IPO paths.
