Top Brokers Don't Just Acquire - They Retain

As we move past the halfway point of 2025, the forex industry is abuzz with activity. Numerous expos and industry gatherings have taken place in recent months, and the Fazzaco team has been actively involved in several. One clear trend has emerged from our conversations with brokers: client acquisition is no longer the only game in town - long-term growth now hinges on maximizing client lifetime value (LTV).
What Plus500's Financials Reveal
Earlier this week, Fazzaco reported on the latest H1 2025 earnings and operational data from Plus500, a leading multi-asset broker. The numbers speak volumes: 56k new customers onboarded in the first half of the year; nearly 180,000 active clients; and $3.1 billion in client deposits. But this shift towards retention is not new. In its FY 2024 report, Plus500 revealed that 88% of its revenue came from clients active for over a year - 67% from those active for over three years, and 35% from clients engaged for more than five. The takeaway? The ability to retain and cultivate long-term relationships with clients is now a defining characteristic of a top-tier brokerage.

Meanwhile, many industry professionals have noted that Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC) have risen sharply compared to 5–10 years ago. One insider, using publicly available earnings data, estimated that the average client is worth around $1,136 after costs. "If brokers can keep clients trading," he noted, "that number could be much higher. In my own case, I've spent over $6,470 in trading fees in just the past six months." In short, a seasoned trader who stays is likely far more valuable than dozens of fleeting new signups.
Why Traders Don't Stick Around
Despite efforts by many platforms to prolong client engagement through "interaction tools," the typical user journey still tends to fade out quickly - with most traders going inactive within the first two months. Data analytics and CRM systems may identify high-value users with great precision, but without emotional connection or meaningful content, retention rarely follows.
As one industry voice put it, "This industry is obsessed with data - but data doesn't build loyalty. Especially in high-risk environments like trading, clients need an investment narrative they can believe in."
Back in 2023, XCritical offered similar advice in a piece on client retention: "Tell success stories in Forex." Transforming real trader journeys into authentic, relatable content builds trust more effectively than any chart or data set ever could.
Personalized Content Is Finally Delivering Real Value
In today's trading landscape, personalization isn't a luxury - it's expected. Whether it's behavior-based alerts or content tailored to trading style, hyper-relevant communication has become essential to reactivating dormant accounts.
Take Plus500 again as an example. The platform has invested in a tech ecosystem centered around retention, with 87% of OTC trades now taking place on mobile devices - enabling seamless, real-time engagement and personalized content delivery.
For brokers aiming to future-proof their business, a sustainable retention strategy comes down to five key elements:
Storytelling: Share authentic trader journeys - from struggle to strategy to success - via your platform, email, or community channels to build trust.
Personalized Content: Use CRM tools and behavior data to deliver relevant signals, strategy updates, and market analysis tailored to each trader.
Gamification & Community: Introduce milestones, badges, or community rankings to foster progression and belonging.
Education & Empowerment: Provide tailored research, trading psychology insights, and post-trade analysis to deepen understanding and long-term confidence.
Targeted Incentives: Offer perks like fee discounts, loyalty programs, or VIP services to reward consistent, high-quality engagement.
And Finally...
Client retention, at its core, isn't about tools - or even data. It's about relationships.
It's about whether your platform can be "present" for a trader who stares at their chart in the middle of the night, uncertain of their next move.
It's about whether your platform has the right words - or even a simple notification - for someone who just experienced their first margin call.
The most successful brokers of the future won't be asking, "How much did this client deposit?"
They'll be asking, "How far have we walked with this trader on their journey?" Because that journey shouldn't just be a cycle of deposits and closures - it should be a story of shared growth worth investing in.
