Trading Activities in Tokyo to Remain Unaffected, Says JPX

Despite the recent government decision declaring a state of emergency in Tokyo, the Japan Exchange Group (JPX) declared on Friday that trading activities will continue. According to a press statement, the current situation of COVID-19's nationwide spread is increasing the number of new cases in the country, but it is not expected to disrupt trading for the time being.

The Japanese government announced that a state of emergency for Tokyo will be declared, effective from July 12, in the wake of increasing COVID cases. But JPX believes that trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Osaka Exchange, and Tokyo Commodity Exchange, on the other hand, will proceed as usual.
Earlier, the Japanese government decided to declare a state of emergency ahead of the Olympic Games after meeting with health experts.
"JPX Group remains committed to ensuring stable market operations and reliability of the market through effective market surveillance as well as by monitoring the movements of each market. We appreciate your continued understanding and support," JPX added.
The order remains valid through August 22. The city has gone through several preventive measures that seem to be proven less effective to slow the spread of COVID-19.
"The infections are in their expansion phase and everyone in this country must firmly understand the seriousness of it. The period from July to September is the most critical time for Japan’s COVID-19 measures," Dr. Shigeru Omi, a top government medical adviser, told local reporters.
