TRY/JPY Volume Jumps 235% on Click 365, but Dollar-Yen Still Rules by Value

Trading in the Turkish lira against the yen on Tokyo Financial Exchange’s Click 365 platform reached 666,619 contracts in August, a 235.4% increase year-on-year, marking the fifth consecutive month that TRY/JPY ranked first by contract count. Despite this lead, the pair’s trading value of approximately ¥22.1 billion remained far below the ¥601.5 billion generated by USD/JPY, which continued to dominate by monetary exposure.
Monthly activity for TRY/JPY has been volatile, with contract volumes fluctuating from 612,981 in April to 498,911 in May, 701,623 in June, and over 1.14 million in July, before dropping 41.7% month-on-month in August. Still, the pair held the top spot by contract count throughout the period. Total Click 365 FX Daily Futures volume reached 1.737 million contracts in August, up 45.9% year-on-year but down 34.1% from July.
USD/JPY recorded 376,532 contracts, while MXN/JPY and ZAR/JPY generated 166,441 and 161,502 contracts respectively, with ZAR/JPY volume more than doubling from a year earlier. Contract specifications complicate direct comparisons: one Click 365 contract represents 10,000 Turkish lira or US dollars, but 100,000 Mexican pesos, South African rand, or Hungarian forints. Currency prices also vary significantly, preventing contract counts from serving as a common measure of notional exposure.
From April to August, TRY/JPY, MXN/JPY, ZAR/JPY, and HUF/JPY all ranked above EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY by contract count, but the same pattern did not hold for trading value. Wider interest-rate differentials, such as Turkey’s one-week repo rate at 37% versus the Bank of Japan’s overnight rate guideline near 1%, may explain the prominence of high-yield currencies. While the Tokyo Financial Exchange does not provide strategy-level data, the pattern aligns with carry trade demand, though adverse currency moves and sharp monthly swings in the lira pair highlight the associated risks. TRY/JPY’s five-month run at the top of the contract rankings underscores its significance, but USD/JPY’s far larger trading value confirms that the dollar remains the largest monetary exposure on the platform.
