UBS Settles $300M Credit Suisse RMBS Case with DOJ

UBS has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to resolve legacy obligations tied to Credit Suisse's historic mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) activities. The agreement, announced on August 1, involves a $300 million payment to settle outstanding consumer relief commitments initially agreed upon in a 2017 deal between Credit Suisse and the DOJ.
This resolution marks another step in UBS's broader effort to wind down inherited legal matters following its acquisition of Credit Suisse. According to the Swiss banking group, the move aligns with its goal to address such issues "at pace in a fair and balanced way and in the best interest of all its stakeholders."
The payment will be made by Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC and, as a result of the settlement, UBS expects to record a credit in its third-quarter financials. The credit relates to the release of a contingent liability set aside during the Credit Suisse acquisition.
UBS has been actively working through the remaining legal and financial entanglements from Credit Suisse's past, including several complex regulatory and litigation matters. The resolution of this RMBS case may be viewed as a signal of UBS's intent to move beyond legacy burdens and focus on integration and forward growth.
