UK FCA Maintains Firm Stance on Crypto Regulation
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has recently reaffirmed its commitment to a strict regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency sector, emphasizing the necessity of high standards for a sustainable digital asset industry. Val Smith, head of payments and digital assets at the FCA, addressed criticisms suggesting that stringent registration requirements could stifle innovation within the crypto market.
Smith cautioned that innovations built on unregulated foundations are inherently unstable, likening them to structures built on sand. She stressed the importance of collaboration with government and industry stakeholders to ensure a robust framework for the sector's development.
Despite facing scrutiny for a relatively low number of registered crypto firms, Smith defended the FCA's approach. She highlighted that the regulator thoroughly assesses all applications and prioritizes the mitigation of financial crime risks. “Allowing illicit funds to flow can have severe consequences” , she stated, referencing concerns such as terrorism and organized crime.
Since 2020, the FCA has received around 360 registration applications, approving fewer than 50, with only three new firms added in 2024. Smith encouraged firms to engage proactively with the FCA throughout the application process, emphasizing the regulator's readiness to offer support.
While acknowledging the ongoing challenges in the sector, Smith reiterated that the FCA's primary focus remains on consumer protection and the integrity of the financial system. She believes that maintaining rigorous regulatory standards is crucial for establishing a healthy and competitive crypto market in the UK.
