The UK government has unveiled a sweeping set of financial reforms centered on the fintech sector, positioning it as a pillar of the so-called Leeds Reforms - a national strategy aimed at stimulating investment, job creation, and regulatory modernization.

Chancellor Rachael Reeves outlined the initiative, which will provide targeted support to fintech start-ups and scale-ups through improved regulatory guidance, enhanced access to funding, and a strengthened talent pipeline. "Now we need to double down on our global strengths to put the UK ahead in the global race for financial businesses," Reeves said.

The reforms include expanding the British Business Bank's financial capacity to £25.6 billion and launching a Global Talent Taskforce to draw international expertise. Additional measures will support skills development through PhD funding and new training initiatives led by the Financial Services Skills Commission.

Henk Van Hulle, CEO of Open Banking Limited, expressed support for the initiative, stating: "The Chancellor has committed to exactly the kind of long-term goals the UK needs."

Broader elements of the reform package aim to encourage retail investment and streamline financial regulation, while also adjusting capital requirements to enable more bank lending.
