Various U.S. exchanges, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Cboe Global Markets and CME Group have announced plans to close on January 9, 2025, in observance of the National Day of Mourning following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

The NYSE Group, part of Intercontinental Exchange, will close all of its markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE American Equities, and several options exchanges, to honor the former president's legacy. "Jimmy Carter, with humble roots as a farmer and family man, devoted his life to public service and defending our freedom," said Lynn Martin, President of NYSE Group. The U.S. flag displayed above the NYSE will fly at half-staff during the mourning period.

Similarly, Cboe Global Markets will close its U.S. equities and options exchanges, including Cboe BYX and BZX, and will observe a moment of silence on its trading floor at 8:20 a.m. CT. CME Group, another major U.S. exchange, will implement an early close for agricultural, equity, and interest rate markets.
