Binance UK Chief Jonathan Farnell Departs as Executive Exodus Continues Amid Regulatory Storm

Under growing regulatory pressure, crypto giant Binance has recently experienced a wave of executive departures, and its Head of Binance UK and CEO of Bifinity, Jonathan Farnell, has also become one of them.
UK corporate filings suggested that Farnell had stepped down from a senior compliance role at Binance Europe in June, and subsequently resigned from his position at Binance Markets Limited (Binance UK) in late September.
As seen on his LinkedIn profile, Farnell joined Binance in May 2021 from eToro, a multi-asset trading and investment platform where he had been held the role of Compliance leader for several years. Initially hired in a compliance-focused role, Farnell was later promoted to head Binance's UK operations.
In March 2022, Farnell was appointed CEO of Bifinity, a new payments outfit launched by Binance, while continuing as a director of Binance UK. In addition, as part of the partnership strategy between Bifinity and EQONEX, a FCA-licensed digital asset financial services company, from March to November 2022.
Binance had planned to acquire a crypto service license in the United Kingdom through the acquisition of EQONEX, but was intervened by the British regulator. The entry into force of new regulations on crypto promotion in the UK earlier this month has further dealt a serious blow to the crypto exchange's growth in the region.
Regulatory pressure is not limited to the UK. Last week, Stéphanie Cabossioras, executive director of Binance's French subsidiary, resigned. Binance US has successively lost a number of key executives, including its CEO Brian Shroder, Head of Legal Krishna Juvvadi, and Chief Risk Officer Sidney Majalya.
