I: The SVG FSA License Crisis

The year of 2023 was kicked off by a shockwave affecting FX brokers, sent by the Financial Services Authority of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG FSA).

In an early January Notice they issued, the watchdog made it clear that companies wishing to engage in FX activity need to provide a certified copy of the requisite licences from the jurisdiction(s) where their business activities will be performed; and for those that are already registered in SVG and engage in FX activity will be provided 45 days (until March 10, 2023) to provide the FSA with a certified copy of the requisite licences from the jurisdiction(s) where their business activities will be performed.

#1 - SVG FSA Steps up Regulations on FX Activity, What Does It Mean to Brokers?

4aa638da649fc69932640d030ec950d.jpeg

We all know that this Caribbean country has been popular with financial institutions for its low business registration requirements. Many forex brokers, too, are registered through the SVG regulator. So, what were they thinking when they decided to step up regulations that they knew for sure would take a toll on their plan to be a great offshore financial hub?

According to the Notice, the move is a response to the increasing fraud complaints on forex brokers. The trend is likely to damage the reputation of SVG as an international financial hub. Also, SVG does not regulate forex trading, they simply register a company that may or may not engage in FX activity.

Therefore, some industry insiders believe that the ultimate purpose of the FSA's action is to make sure only FX brokers licensed by jurisdictions where FX is strictly regulated come to them to register, so that their reputation can be recovered.

#2 - Fazzaco Talks to Leaders: The Aftermath of SVG FSA's Regulatory Blitz on FX Brokers

About six months after the SVG FSA crisis, Fazzaco has talked to a number of C-suites working at compliance firms that help forex brokers with licensing to learn how they felt about this incident.

"You get what you pay for" is the shared opinion. An inexpensive jurisdiction may come with a bad reputation and generate bad reviews when retail traders check you out online. Many affected brokers learned a lesson in a hard way, and that is they have got to have a Plan B when it comes to licensing.

II: 2023, Year One of AI Era

If one were to write the history of artificial intelligence in the future, 2023 would be a year that could not be skipped. This year, OpenAI's ChatGPT hit the market and broke through one million users in five days, and since March, its weekly active users surpassed 100 million.

Soon after, Bing, Google Bard, YouChat, Claude followed suit, and Midjourney and other AI drawing tools also gained popularity. In just one year, the technology changed too many facets of our society, including the financial market.

#3 - #ChatGPT, How Will It Revolutionize Finance?

a391543ad8a51eda898986b58ed8000.jpeg

In this February article, Fazzaco tried to see what is behind the AI craze and reveal its impact on the industry. In fact, AI has already made its mark: one of the most notable examples is the funds that went to the fintech sector by institutional investors. In 2022, the global fintech funding amounted to $75.2 billion, a 46% drop from 2021. It is well known that money only goes to hot spots, so believably, what ChatGPT has done will almost definitely somewhat promote funding for fintechs.

For brokers, AI can also bring them benefits in market analysis, customer service, trade execution, compliance, and other aspects. Of course, Fazzaco also understands the dual nature of things. Therefore, after witnessing the booming of genAI, we invited several financial executives to join our AI Forum in April.

In this AI forum, we invited ten executives from the financial sector, and had an in-depth and detailed discussion on various topics, such as whether the financial industry should embrace the technology, the positive/negative impacts of genAI on brokers and fintechs, how much trust we can place on it, and whether the technology will take away many's jobs.

The Chief Product Officer at AximTrade made a fantastic conclusion, "We are not afraid of the progress, and our employees will be always nice complimentary to the evolving technology. In the brokerage business, every day we encounter something new, market is new everyday and it creates scenarios, which we never had in the past, so only human brains can help to resolve the issues, and human brains can do it only because it collected sufficient experience over the time."

In the year-end summary "A 2024 Pan-Financial Industry Outlook" by Fazzaco, it is mentioned that the year 2024 heralds a seismic shift in the financial cosmos - a phenomenon aptly termed the generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) Revolution, indicating a new era in the realm of forex. Within this dynamic upheaval, the bedrock of transformation lies in the omnipotent reign of AI, reshaping the contours of FX trading and altering the very fabric of forex dynamics. This article is an elaboration of this footnote.

III. Memorable Broker Stories

Forex brokers have always been the group that Fazzaco has been committed to serving since the beginning, and also the group that our content team has paid close attention to.

In 2023, we have recorded a number of major events involving brokers. First of all, there was the out-of-court settlement between iS Prime and ThinkMarkets in June, which put an end to the longest-running lawsuit in the industry.

#7 - From War to Peace: How iS Prime and ThinkMarkets Resolved Their Conflict Over Liquidity, Index Swaps and Internal Trading

Institutional liquidity provider iS Prime (formerly IS Prime) and retail forex and CFD broker ThinkMarkets reached an out-of-court settlement on May 9. Fazzaco shed light on this lawsuit triggered by a contractual dispute over exclusivity clauses from three perspectives: iS Prime vs. ThinkMarkets: What was the crux of the conflict? iS Prime's transfer of index swap business to Hong Kong, and Think's counterclaim.

The parties were also glad to see that they were able to reach a settlement agreement and spend their time on more meaningful things.

#8 - Brokers Gone Broke: The CCC UK Case and Common Causes of FX Broker Bankruptcy

21bc6ed4b9207d09e51defc5743a55c.jpeg

The Covid outbreak in 2020 caused a lot of uncertainty and volatility in the global financial markets. Many asset classes suffered losses, but the forex market was an exception. The forex market saw a rise in trading volumes, as traders could profit from both rising and falling currencies. Forex trading also became more popular among new traders, who valued liquidity and flexibility during the pandemic.

However, despite the increased trading volume in the forex market, several forex brokers have faced insolvency in recent years. Some examples are Probis, SVS Securities, Halifax, XeroMarkets and the latest one, City Credit Capital UK, according to Fazzaco News. This leads to a question: Why do brokerages still go bust one after another in a time of rising online forex trading?

#9 - Why Is the Capex.com and NAGA Merger A Game-Changer?

b8f02f3b5af2a78adc63f46dac4220c.jpeg

At the end of the year, leading online trading platform CAPEX.com announced a strategic merger with NAGA Group, which provides a one-stop super financial APP, shocking the industry. The merger aims to create a global fintech powerhouse, with a user base of over 1.5 million and an expected revenue of $90 million in 2023.

But what does this merger mean for the market? And what is the story behind the merger? Answers to these questions can be found in this article.

IV. Best Dramas of the Year in Digital and Tech Sector

The digital and tech sector is always full of drama, as there are no shortage of drama kings and queens here. Among them, the most famous one is undoubtedly Elon Musk. In 2023, we recorded several best dramas of the year.

#10 - Dogecoin Skyrockets, Twitter Renamed "X.com" - What's Elon Musk Up To?

134e0b98e504ced86aed83071efd3ff.jpeg

In 2022, after the billionaire spent $43 billion to acquire Twitter, Fazzaco published several articles "Elon Musk Owns Twitter Now, But Will He Live up to His Words?" and "How Was Elon Musk's First Day as Twitter's Owner? Apparently There's A Lot to 'Sink In'" Therefore, after Musk announced in July 2023 that Twitter was renamed X, we wanted to ask the question: Y?

On the other hand, Musk's love affair with Dogecoin seems to be going strong. "If done right, X would become half of the global financial system," said Musk in an interview. Then, someone spotted that he added the symbol of dogecoin "Ð" behind his X logo on his Twitter bio, which stands for this meme coin. Dogecoin's price skyrocketed responsively on July 24.

#11 - OpenAI Drama Ends, But Is the Market Still Bullish on AI?

8df749ecac71978b9c375ca9c2d91dc.jpeg

One of the AI leaders, OpenAI, underwent a series of dramatic changes in November. Shortly after CEO Sam Altman announced joining Microsoft, he announced on Tuesday that he would resume his role as OpenAI's CEO, a reversal that surprised many. And the root of all this may stem from OpenAI's quirky board structure.

#12 - Guilty and Gone: Binance CEO Quits as Crypto Titan Struggles with Regulatory Pressure

04250ed8b2a07419b95d97d5eb9778d.jpeg

On November 21, 2023, the founder and CEO of Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, officially reached a plea deal with the U.S. Department of Justice, involving charges of money laundering, bank fraud, violating sanctions, and more. After pleading guilty, CZ announced on social media the next day that he had resigned from his position as CEO. It is reported that this regulatory crisis will result in Binance having to pay a fine of up to $4.3 billion to the U.S. Treasury Department. And more importantly, what may follow is the most serious regulatory crisis that this once-dominant exchange has ever faced.
